St. Dominic Church - Catechism Day Celebration 2020

On the 22nd of February 2020, Catechism Day was celebrated beginning with the Eucharistic celebration at 4 pm. Rev. Fr. Dominic Mendonca the former provincial of the Dominicans in India was the main celebrant along with Rev. Fr. Aquin Noronha- Parish Priest and Rev. Fr. Royston Lobo. The liturgy was organized by the catechism children from different classes and the melodious choir by children themselves who were trained by Mr. Julian D’souza.

After mass , refreshments were served and the children as well as the parishioners gathered together in the hall for the evening programme which started at 5.30 pm. The compere Ms. Riona Lasrado welcomed the gathering and said that Catechism is a way to draw us children closer to God and strengthen our faith through the Word of God and understand the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Inorder to invoke Gods blessings a prayer dance was performed which was very graceful and well appreciated by all. Ms. Shreya Miranda gave the welcome address and welcomed the chief guest- Fr. Dominic Mendonca, Fr. Aquin Noronha, Fr. Royston and Mrs. Noreen Pinto- Secretary of the Parish Pastoral council.

The tiny tots from class I and II performed an action song with so much enthusiasm which touched the hearts of all in the audience to see the amount of energy and talent they have. Later Russel Gonsalves of Std. X shared his experiences on how he has been able to strengthen his faith and know more about God and thanked all his teachers who have helped him in his life’s journey.

The members of the children’s choir gave a very melodious performance by singing hymns. Ms. Sonal D’cunha of YCS shared her experiences over the years in catechism classes and most importantly how YCS has helped her broaden her outlook towards life and helped her take up challenges in life. The students of IX std performed a skit on the life of the Centurion and how his faith in Jesus healed his servant.

Fr. Dominic Mendonca- chief guest delivered his speech wherein he mentioned the importance of having Catechism classes and how they have helped to groom young minds and also instill in them to discern the calling of God. After that Fr. Aquin Noronha – parish priest spoke to the gathering about the importance of faith formation and sowing the seed of faith on a fertile soil. Fr. Aquin acknowledged the services rendered by the catechism teachers and presented them with a rose as a token of gratitude. The vote of thanks was given by Sheldon Fernandes of class X.

Prizes were distributed to children who have secured the 1st and 2nd highest in the catechism tests, those who had the highest attendance as well as first three highest coins in mission Sunday boxes.

The programme ended by singing the hymn to St. Dominic by children.
