"Laudato Si' " Plant-A-Sapling at Home

Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Ashoknagar Unit, on the occasion of Vanamahotsava organised “Plant-A-Sapling at home” initiative on 11th July 2021 for the parishioners of St Dominic Church Ashoknagar.

ICYM took inspiration from “Laudato Si” (Praise be to you), an encyclical written by Pope Francis on care for our common home. It talks about the necessity of swift global action against environmental degradation and global warming.

The people were encouraged to register their names and take part in this initiative. 47 people registered their names to receive a sapling. Each member of ICYM was also encouraged to nurture a plant by giving them a snake plant. More than 65 saplings were planted. The ICYM requested people to donate any extra plants that they had. Many parishioners were generous enough to donate plants as well as financially support this cause.

Plants that were donated were: Snake plant, Alovera, Passion fruit, Sitaphal, Ramphal, Lemon Grass, Mango (Pyri) and coconut.
With the contribution of 2530/- received from the donors some plants like Mango (Mallika), Jamun(Pink), Neem Plant, Long Pepper (Pipli), Rambutan were purchased from the nursery.

All the ICYM members gathered on 11th July after the 8am mass. Saplings were distributed in the church premises after the mass. A few saplings were delivered to the homes of those who couldn't come to Church.
The program ended with the members then gathering in the Church premises to plant Mango (Mallika) and Rambutan which were planted by Fr Daniel Veigas, Parish Priest of St Dominic Church, Mr Maxim Crasta, Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs Noreen Pinto, Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council, Mrs Deborah Locker , Animator of ICYM and the ICYM members.

Rupal Gonsalves was the event head who took up the responsibility to design the banner, coordinate with members and donors and encouraged all the ICYM members to be proactive in making this event a successful one.
